FOTA HOUSE & GARDENS

Fota House and Gardens, has to be one of the best preserved Irish period houses and gardens. Early in the 19th century, the Smith-Barry family decided to enlarge a small hunting lodge on Fota Island to become the main family residence. Sir Richard Morrison, considered one of Ireland's greatest architects was retained to transform the hunting lodge to a house reflecting the importance of the family. The result was the creation of an example of Regency architecture, considered to be one if the best in Ireland. Within the house the architects created some of the finest neo-classical interiors found in Ireland. Fota House contains a wealth of interior detailing, rich plasterwork, elegant door-cases, marble fireplaces and fine external stone detailing.
