St Andrew’s Church in the centre of the village is awarded 3 Stars in Simon Jenkins “England’s 1000 Best Churches” book for its spectacular exterior, peaceful churchyard and poignant World War I memorials. Siegfried Sassoon is buried in the churchyard.

Evelyn Waugh wrote “Scoop” whilst staying in the village.

The deal to release Nelson Mandela from prison was brokered in secret meetings between Tbabo Mbeki of the ANC & representatives of P W Botha’s South African government at Mells Park in 1988.
