Mellerstain

Mellerstain, one of Scotland's great Georgian houses was begun in 1725 by William Adam and completed several years later by his famous son, Robert.
The main entrance hall leads to a long corridor with a staircase to the bedroom floor, from which there is a small back staircase leading to a large gallery room running north to south.
The interior decoration is outstanding with colourful plasterwork ceilings throughout. The ground floor has a sitting room, a beautiful library of double cube design, a music room, the main drawing room, with original silk brocade wall coverings, a small drawing room and a second small library.
In the vaulted halls of the old servants' quarters, the Mellerstain Art Gallery is a dramatic setting for exhibitions of high-quality art of all kinds.
The house stands in 80 hectares of magnificent parkland, with an Italianate formal terraced garden at the rear, with a sweeping stretch of lawn descending to a lake.
Also on the estate there is an 18th century stone gatehouse.
