Renishaw Hall & Gardens
Its gardens - designed at the end of the 19th century by Sir George Sitwell - are among the finest in the Italian style in the country: there are masses of spring flowers, a bluebell fortnight, wonderful wide borders, 1000 summer roses, garden rooms separated by dark yew hedges, and long views over the Derbyshire countryside, all punctuated by the sound of fountains playing in the still ponds that reflect them. Sir George installed beautiful Italian statuary and the family has added several modern pieces.
Many people have called it the most romantic garden they know.
Children can play in the Fairytale garden which has a maze, a living willow tunnel, storytelling events, silhouettes of storybook characters and trails to follow for all ages. This year Granny Diane will tell stories on one Sunday each month in the Storytelling area among the trees.
Renishaw Hall is just off Junction 30 of the M1, eight miles from Chesterfield Railway Station.
